Importance in humanitarian missions:
A scar on the body is also a scar on the soul – we give someone their self-esteem back by showing them we care enough about them and their body to try and restore their body. The number of patients who need surgical procedures in many countries is great. There are not enough physicians in many countries to operate on those in need. Geographic areas where financial assistance is lacking, areas where there are no trained physicians to help can be served by medical missions such as Women for Women IPRAS. Our physicians have a heart for helping others, and now have the financial assistance to help fund the staff and supplies in the host country to help these underprivileged patients get medical care. In addition we will teach and train other host country physicians so that future patients can be cared for by their countrymen. We also hope to raise awareness in the host country of the problems which lead to burn injury so that prevention can become a focus of the community avoid future burn injury ‘accidents’.
